Coast Guards get new Offshore patrol Vessel

Panji (Goa), Jan 22, (ANI): To augment coastal security in wake of the Mumbai Terror attacks, ICGS Samrat, the sixth Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV), was commissioned in the Coast Guards at Goa.

 

ICGS Samrat is the projection of the Indian Coast Guard's resolve and will ensure the marine security in Mumbai.

 

This vessel is 105 meters long and 2250 tons heavy. This displacement vessel is driven by two 8000 HP diesel engines and is capable of cruising at a speed of 25 knots.

 

Samrat has also two 30 mm CRN-91 guns with fire control system as its main armament. In addition, two 12.7 mm "Prahari" Heavy Machine Guns (HMGs) have also been provided to augment the vessel's firepower.

 

The ship commissioned on Wednesday, is fitted with ultra modern navigational and communication equipment, and is capable of embarking the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH).

 

ICGS Samrat has an endurance of 20 days and can traverse a total of 6500 nautical miles (12000 KM), without refueling.

 

The ship is also capable of operating Sea King and Chetak helicopters.

 

The ship uses the latest technology for man-machine interface to reduce manual handling of machinery and equipment.

 

With the addition of ICGS Samrat, the Coast Guard fleet now comprises of 41 ships, 18 commissioned and 16 non-commissioned craft and 45 aircraft. (ANI)
