National, Wed, 21 Jan 2009 IANS

New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday began hearing on a petition on the implementation of the Sachar Committee recommedations on improving the socio-economic conditions of the Muslim community.

Senior lawyer P.N. Lekhi told the court that the recommendations were not in the interest of society and sought scrapping them.

The court was hearing Lekhi's arguments on a public interest petition filed by the Rashtriya Mukti Morcha, an NGO, challenging the government's action taken report on the recommendations.

The government set up the committee headed by former Delhi High Court chief justice Rajender Sachar to look into the socio-economic and educational condition of Muslims and suggest ways to improve it.

The committee submitted its report on Nov 30, 2006, and it was tabled in parliament.

Lekhi was critical of the government's attitude in singling out a specific community.

'The terms of reference of the committee is an extension of the Pakistan Resolution that was made in 1940 in Lahore,' Lekhi said.

The bench, however, asked him to maintain dignity and restrict his argument to the disputed points of the panel report.
