Interstate robbers got directions from jailed masterminds: police

National, Tue, 20 Jan 2009 IANS

New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) The Delhi Police Tuesday said the robbers who were injured in a shootout the previous day were members of an interstate gang and were working on the directions of their masterminds, who are cooling their heels in the capital's high security Tihar jail.

'There are two modules of the gang. One is led by Sharafat Sheikh and Dabbu alias Charanjeet - both are in the jail - and the other module is led by Satya Prakash alias Satte and Bitoo,' said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal.

'Bitoo is the brother of Dabbu. And the common link between them was Sonu alias Kuldip. Sonu is a trusted man of Sheikh,' Dhaliwal said.

'Sheikh was controlling the gang from inside (the jail). He was receiving all the information through his meetings with his friends and relatives in the jail,' the police officer said.

The police on Monday arrested Satya Prakash, who is an accused under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) and wanted by Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan police, and his associates Sonu, Shakeel and Nadeem after the shootout in Green Park residential area of south Delhi. The accused were planning to rob two banks.

The accused received multiple gun injuries and were admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Two of the five, who managed to escape in Hyundai Santro car, were later arrested from a television news channel office on the outskirts of the national capital.

Dhaliwal said they all had met in the jail and their gangs jointly committed series of robberies in the national capital region (NCR). They have also committed a sensational robbery of Rs.8 million in Kota, Rajasthan.

Robbery in Connaught Place, bank robbery in Samaipur Badli, robbery in Greater Kailash jewellery shop, and robbery of father-son duo in Aanad Vihar were among few sensational crimes committed by the gang in the past few months, according to the police.

The police said Satya Prakash has at least 25 cases registered against him.

'Urge to earn quick bucks was the driving factor for the gang members. Sonu, whose family has property worth million of rupees, thought that even the best business would not fetch him more than Rs.500,000 a month,' Dhaliwal said.

'Like his other associates, he wanted to earn cash of Rs.1 million in a single day. The accused also used to spend the money lavishly,' he added.
