Injured robbers were targeting banks, jewellers: Police
New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) A day after four robbers were injured in a shootout, Delhi Police Tuesday said the 'intelligent' criminals were members of an interstate gang and were targetting to rob two banks, a jewellery and a diamond shop and an embassy cash van in south Delhi.
'On Monday they wanted to rob two banks. Then their plans were to rob a jeweller shop and a diamond shop. They were also gathering information about an embassy van that carries cash,' said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal.
'The accused had become fearless and desperate. They are very intelligent and planned their robberies to minute precision.
'They thought like other occasions they would remain undetected after committing the robbery (Monday) or would escape after firing on the police. Even in the worst case they thought they would come out of the jail in three-four months,' Dhaliwal added.
The four accused, Satya Prakash, Shakeel, Sonu and Nadeem were injured in the Monday shootout with the police in Green Park area of south Delhi.
The police said the accused fired 19 gunshots on them with their automatic pistol, while the cops retaliated 35 rounds from their AK-47s and small weapons.
The police have seized their weapons, 11 mobile phones and two rucksacks.
The injured were taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where on Tuesday three of them were shifted to the general wards, while Sonu's condition remained critical.
Harpal alias Honey and Nadir, who had managed to escape during the shootout in a white Hyundai Santro car, were arrested from the studio of a television news channel Monday evening.
'We have arrested Harpal and Nadir and are aware of the identity of two others who were in the car. Searches are underway to nab them,' Dhaliwal said.
The police officer said Harpal and Nadir, who were playing snooker in a Lajpat Nagar shop, had asked the owner of the Santro car to lend them his vehicle for 10 minutes. They then drove to South Extension where the gang leader Satya Prakash and others were waiting for them.
After the shootout, they went to the owner's Lajpat Nagar house and returned the car threatening him not to tell anything to the police.
