New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) Supporting the demand for a judicial enquiry into a shootout in Jamia Nagar of south Delhi in which the police killed two alleged terrorists four months ago, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh Tuesday indicated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too was considering the demand.
'In democracy, it is always better if things get clear,' Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.
Asked if he think a judicial probe into the shootout will clarify the matter, he replied: 'Of course.'
'As far as I understand, the prime minister is thinking over the issue. I had a word with the prime minister on the issue but it is my privilege and I can't divulge the details,' Singh added.
Four months after Delhi Police shot dead two suspected terrorists involved in Sep 13 Delhi blasts in Jamia Nagar, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh Tuesday supported a judicial enquiry into the encounter.
Two alleged members of the Indian Mujahideen, suspected to be involved in the Sep 13 serial Delhi bombings that claimed 26 lives, were killed in the shootout. One suspected terrorist was arrested but two managed to flee. Senior Delhi Police official M.C. Sharma was killed in the shootout.
There have been demands, from within the Congress as well as other parties and organisations, to probe the shootout to find out if police had a genuine case or the suspects were killed in a staged gun battle.
The National Human Rights Commission (HNRC) asked Delhi Police on Dec 22 to come out with a full enquiry report on the shootout within six weeks.
