Amritsar, Jan.20 (ANI): Having devoted major part of his life to singing praises of Goddess Vaishno at religious ceremonies, Narender Chanchal today rules millions of hearts not just across India but also around the world.

Born into a religious Punjabi family of Amritsar, Narender Chanchal has gained so much popularity over the years that today he needs no introduction among Hindus, irrespective of place across the world.

Chanchal is known for his soul-stirring melodious voice. He is considered quintessential in Jagrans or the night-long religious ceremonies performed in praise of Goddess Vasihno by Hindus.

Describing how much he values the devotional songs that are distinct from popular Bollywood songs, Chanchal says: "The devotional songs are not just simple songs, this is a kind of devotion to God. I believe this is the result of my dedication that people across the world know me and appreciate my singing."

As a musician, Narender Chanchal has also received several awards for playback singing in films, including the `Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer Award' in 1973.

Chanchal believes he developed a taste for music basically due to his pious mother.

"My childhood days were similar to that of other children. But how did I manage to get into the music world even I do not know. Music is not a tradition in my family. But my mother used to sing devotional songs at home. She was a good singer and I believe that I have got this talent from her," Narender Chanchal recalls.

"I used to follow the sound of drums and wedding music without realizing it. It was my daily routine. I used to sit outside shops and listen to the songs on loudspeakers and sleep only after the shops would close down. The people of my locality used to take me back home," Chanchal reveals. "I myself composed the first devotional song. I have sung that devotional song in front of many famous singers and they appreciated it. My mother was happy because I never used to participate in prayers at home. But, later on, surprisingly, I got drawn to devotional singing," said Chanchal. Talking about the Mumbai, the city where Bollywood exists, Chanchal says: "Mumbai is a dream city, which grips the imagination of every person who comes here. Every singer desires to sing for films and film is a medium, which helps a singer earn name and fame across the world. There is no problem in entering the world of films along with your culture and tradition." By Savinder Singh (ANI)
