Mayawati rubbishes allegations of link between her birthday and engineer's killing

Lucknow, Fri, 16 Jan 2009 ANI

Lucknow/Allahabad, Jan 16 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has rubbished allegations of a link between her birthday and the killing of an engineer.

Opposition parties including Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress party and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have blamed the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Government for terrorising people and large-scale extortion for the birthday celebrations of party and Mayawati.

Last month, an engineer of Uttar Pradesh's Public Works Department, M K Gupta was beaten to death in Auraiya allegedly by a legislator of BSP.

"This time on my birthday, all the political parties have unitedly hatched a political conspiracy and linked incident of Auraiya to my birthday's donation collection without solid evidence," Mayawati told a news conference here on Thursday.

Police baton-charged and resorted to firing tear gas shells on the protesting SP activists in Lucknow.

Meanwhile, SP activists demanded action against a police official who allegedly took an elephant into custody, which was part of the party's demonstration in Allahabad.

"As we stepped up to carry out our protest and reached Balsangh Square with the elephant, police took into custody the youth and the elephant. Action should be taken and a case should be registered against the police official under the Wild Life Act, who took the animal into custody," said Manik Chandra Patel, an SP activist.

The BSP has clearly become the common enemy for Congress, SP and BJP after the party rode to power single-handedly in 2007. (ANI)
