Lucknow, Jan.15 (ANI): The Congress party on Thursday blamed the Bahujan Samaj Party legislators and Uttar Pradesh administration for money extortion from people in the name of "donations", as thousands of workers led by UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi courted arrest during protests on the much touted Chief Minister Mayawati's birthday.
"We are objecting to the way money is being extracted from common people and a huge amount has been collected by the administration, MPs and Bahujan Samaj Party workers. And now there are enough evidence to show how it is converted into a donation," said AICC general secretary and UP in-charge Digvijay Singh to mediapersons here. Responding to Mayawati's statement that the fund collection doubled, Digvijay alleged, "Party workers have not collected money. It is the administration, which has extracted the money. Name one person, who donated willingly. It is extortion and not donation. There is a difference between donation and extortion," Digvijay alleged while adding that the Congress won't allow people of Uttar Pradesh "to be looted the way they are being looted by this government."
Nearly 25,000 Congress workers along with UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, senior state Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, Jagdambika Pal and Virendra Madan courted arrest, a police officer said.
Protesters shouted anti-Mayawati slogan like, "Mayawati ka sathi, khooni haathi" (Mayawati's friend is murderous elephant) pointing to the recent killing of an engineer due to alleged extortion of money by BSP MLA. (ANI)
