Jumbos will be missing from Republic Day parade

National, Wed, 14 Jan 2009 IANS

New Delhi, Jan 14 (IANS) Gaily-decorated elephants that have been the darling of cheering crowds each year on the Republic Day parade will be missing this time as organisers have decided to pull them out to cut down on time.

'Over a period of time the parade has become very monotonous and repetitive, so we have decided to omit the elephants to try and make the parade concise and compact,' a defence ministry official told IANS.

'Considering the security readiness required for the whole time period of the parade, the timing has also been reduced to ease pressure on the security apparatus,' the official added.

The animals were a favourite especially with children who were recipients of bravery awards as the elephants carried them in the parade.

This year children who have won bravery awards will ride on military vehicles.
