Lucknow, Jan 14 (IANS) A man wanted in murder, extortion and abduction cases was killed in a shootout with the police in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, an official said.
Naan Babu alias Ram Singh, 'who carried a reward of Rs.20,000, was shot dead in a gunbattle in Kulli village' in Fatehpur district, some 200 km from Lucknow, police inspector Ram Naresh Yadav told IANS.
Ram Singh was wanted by the police in nearly 20 criminal cases including murder, loot, extortion and abduction, Yadav said.
According to the police, Ram Singh was also wanted in neighbouring states, including Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, in cases of contract killing and abduction.
Acting on a tip-off from the Special Task Force (STF), the police raided a hideout in Kulli village. Ram Singh and his associates allegedly opened fire at the policemen, triggering a shootout.
The exchange of fire continued for over an hour before Ram Singh was killed. Six of his associates managed to escape, the police said.
One rifle, two country made pistols and several live cartridges have been recovered from the shootout site, the police said.
