National rally of Animal Welfare Board flagged off
New Delhi, Jan 14 (ANI): Union Minister for Forests and Environment Namo Narain Meena today said that animals have contributed immensely for well-being of human beings.
Flagging off a national rally on Animal Welfare here today, Meena said, "It is the obligation of mankind to treat our animals in humane manner and protect them from cruelties."
Meena further said this would create awareness regarding humane treatment of animals and to sensitize the people for their valuable contribution to the well- being of mankind.
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Meena said that the social development of a nation is judged by the way its people treat their animals.
The Minister reiterated that it is fundamental duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment, including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and to have compassion for all living creature.
He expressed a hope that this will encourage the formation of public opinion against the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering to animals and for the promotion of animal welfare by means of lectures, books, posters, cinematographic exhibitions and the like.
The national rally has been organised by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) at the beginning of the Animal Welfare Fortnigh-2009.
This 18-day rally will cover cities of Haryana, Rajasthan and U.P. It will travel about 200 kilometers per day creating awareness by using various kinds of publicity materials of the print and electronic media.
They will undertake various activities such as public meetings, exhibitions, health camps for animals, formation of Karuna Clubs in schools and also rescue animals in distress, conduct check on illegal transportation and promote vegetarian way of life.
The sick and injured animals will be treated enroute and sheltered at suitable place as a part of demonstration of animal care. (ANI)
