Chidambaram discusses establishing new NSG hubs with army chief

National, Tue, 13 Jan 2009 IANS

New Delhi, Jan 13 (IANS) Home Minister P. Chidambaram Tuesday discussed setting up of four new regional hubs of the National Security Guard (NSG) with its Director General J.K. Dutt and Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor.

In the 45 minute-long meeting at North Block, Chidambaram sought the army's assistance in an early setting up of NSG hubs in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad.

After the Mumbai terror attacks, the cabinet had approved setting up of NSG hubs to quickly mobilise commandos in case of a terrorist strike.

Sources in the home ministry said that Chidambaram also talked separately with Kapoor, who said shortage of staff could be a obstacle in raising the new NSG hubs. India's elite anti-terror force would need to induct at least 4,000 personnel from the Indian Army and the central paramilitary forces to man the new regional NSG centres.
