Ahmedabad sky turns spectacular with global kite fest

Ahmedabad, Jan 11 (IANS) It was a spectator's delight as kite-flying enthusiasts from around the world showcased their skills at the Vibrant Gujarat-International Kite Festival here Sunday.

 

As many as 82 people from 31 countries and 257 contestants from different parts of the country participated in the annual fest ahead of the Uttarayan festival of Jan 14 that is traditionally celebrated with kite-flying in Gujarat.

 

 

Apart fromt the regular variety, there were many kites in innovative designs - in the shape of the dollar sign or of Hindu deity Lord Hanuman - and in all sizes.

 

 

The kite festival was celebrated with the worshipping of the Sun - seen as a god in the Hindu panteon.

 

 

As many as 5,000 children from poor families performed the surya namaskar or yoga positions in the worship of Sun.

 

 

'Our forefathers knew the power of sun and did sun worship. The world is only now turning towards solar energy and is realising its importance,' said Chief Minister Narendra Modi after inaugurating festival.
