Bhopal, Jan 11 (IANS) The opposition Congress party Sunday demanded that the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) issue a report on the power crisis in Madhya Pradesh after the ruling party failed to fulfil its promise of providing 24-hour electricity in the state.
'The state government should issue a white paper on the power crisis. Power cuts in the state are mercilessly back in the state post-Assembly elections,' senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi said in a statement here.
'The BJP came to power with a promise to provide round-the-clock electricity in both urban and rural areas but the farmers are not getting even two hours of power supply (in a day) for irrigation. The situation in urban areas is none too better,' she said.
She said the government was adopting repressive measures instead of supplying power in the state. 'The latest example of this was police lathi-charge at Alampur in Bhind district on January 9 on people who were demanding power,' she added.
Over 10 people were arrested after a violent demonstration over power cuts Friday. Important documents, furniture and a transformer were damaged Friday when an irate mob set the office of the electricity board at Alampur on fire.
Post-elections, the Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board (MPSEB) has resorted to massive load-shedding ranging from 2-15 hours daily due to a shortfall of about 2,000 MW.
Sources said MPSEB resorted to long power cuts right after the polls as its sagging finances did not permit it to continue purchasing power from other sources.
MPSEB had spared most of the divisional headquarters from the purview of load-shedding before the recently-held assembly election but now they have begun to face a scheduled minimum two-hour power cut.
Similarly, district headquarters face seven-hour power cuts followed by tehsil headquarters nine hours and rural areas 15 hours and more.
