BJP calls for stern action against Pakistan

National,Politics, Sat, 10 Jan 2009 IANS

Bhopal, Jan 10 (IANS) The government must take the international community into confidence and initiate stern action against Pakistan for sponsoring terrorist attacks in India from its soil, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Saturday.

The government should persuade the global community to put the Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelliegence (ISI) on the international watch list since its role in abetting terrorism in India is no longer a secret, BJP president Rajnath Singh told reporters here.

Singh was here to inaugurate a two-day training camp for the newly elected legislators of Madhya Pradesh.

He said the government should have taken stern action against Pakistan soon after the serial bombings in Mumbai suburban trains in 2006 but it had failed to do so and woke from its slumber only after the Nov 26-29 terrorist attacks in India's financial and entertainment capital.

Singh also advocated snapping all diplomatic ties with Pakistan, blocking the sea route between Karachi and Mumbai and recalling the Indian high commissioner from Pakistan.

He added that the government should also ask the US to stop financial aid to Pakistan.

Assuring that the BJP, as a responsible opposition party, was firmly behind the government in all its steps towards combating terrorism, Singh added: 'But the government should not consider it (our support) a blank cheque.'
