The perception about sex, though at this stage, shifts from mere “fun loving” to having discussions on “sexual problems.”
The study was conducted by the Gothenburg University in Sweden for the purpose of knowing attitudes of older people towards sex-in-old age. The results found by Nils Beckman and his colleagues were highly impressive.
For the study, the researchers conducted interviews in which 1,500 people in their 70s participated and the period of study involved 30-years from 1971-72, 1976-77, 1992-93 to 2000-01. The researchers found their enthusiasm for sexual intercourse on a roll.
During the thirty year period from 1971 to 2001, 70-year-old married men reported increasing sexual intercourse from 52 percent to 68 percent, while for the married women of same age, it rose from 38 percent to 56 percent. The sex also enhances during the period of study from 30 to 54 percent among unmarried men and from 0.8 to 12 percent among unmarried women.
Apart from the sexual intercourse, more number of women reported high sexual satisfaction augmented, and more women reported having an orgasm during sex and fewer reported never having had an orgasm.
However, in comparison to men, more number of women admitted increasing number of satisfaction. The vice-versa was in the case of men. The researchers suggested this might be possible at this older-age and now men should be ready to admit "failure" in sexual matters.
The researchers also found less number of cases related to erectile dysfunction (ED) among men, while ejaculation dysfunction were on high among women, but the proportion of premature ejaculation was unchanged.
The researchers though had no concrete answer about the increasing number of sexual intercourse at the third quarter of life, but they made a guess that it might be because today 70-year-old are healthier than 30 years ago.
