Deadlock over transporters strike in India continues

New Delhi, ANI 9 (ANI): The stalemate between transporters across the country and the government continued for the fifth day on Wednesday.

The Government of India has advised states to act tough on truckers and invoke Essential Commodities Act and National Security Act and impound trucks, if needed.

ESMA has already been notified in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi.

Transport Secretary Brahm Dutt said that strict action would be taken against the truckers under provisions of the Act, adding that other states were also contemplating a similar action.

Meanwhile, the strike is gradually having an impact on the prices of essential commodities.

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), which represents around six million truckers' across the country, called for an indefinite strike on Monday, demanding reduction of diesel prices and certain tax concessions.

Tens of thousands of truckers have been off the roads after talks between the AIMTC and the Central Government broke down last weekend.The truckers have vowed to stay off the roads until their demands are met.(ANI)
