Allahabad, Jan 7 (IANS) A meritorious B.Tech student, hailing from Sikkim, allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room here Wednesday, officials said.
Sovit Agarwal, of the Moti Lal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) in Allahabad, ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his hostel room, according to the police.
'It is an unfortunate incident,' said A.B. Samdar, a teachers of the institute. He declined to comment any further.
Institute authorities and the police were ascertaining the reasons behind the incident.
According to Agarwal's room mates, he had returned from Sikkim Tuesday night.
'We saw a Hindi movie on his new lap top which he got from his parents recently. In the morning, he was sleeping and refused to attend class. We thought he was tired and wanted to take rest,' Anshul Shekhar, one of the deceased's roommates, told reporters.
The police have taken Agarwal's mobile and laptop into their possession. 'We will screen the laptop and call details of the mobile,' said police inspector Rajesh Pathak.
