Human rights body not satisfied with Delhi shoot-out report

National, Tue, 06 Jan 2009 IANS

New Delhi, Jan 6 (IANS) Unhappy with the Delhi Police's interim report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked them to come out with a full enquiry report on the Jamia Nagar shoot-out in the capital within six weeks' time.

Following allegations by Kamran Siddiqui of the NGO Real Cause that the Sep 19, 2008 shootout at Batla House in Jamia Nagar of south Delhi could have been 'fabricated', NHRC had issued notice to Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal and sought a report.

Two alleged terrorists suspected to be involved in the Sep 13 Delhi serial bombings, which claimed 26 lives, were killed in the shoot-out. While two other suspected terrorists escaped, one was arrested. Delhi Police inspector M.C. Sharma was also killed in the shoot-out.

'The additional commissioner of police (vigilance) said an FIR was registered at the Jamia Nagar police station regarding the incident. The case was initially investigated by the local police and on Oct 1, 2008 the investigation was transferred to the crime branch,' an NHRC official said.

The official also said the police officer told them that the issue regarding the magisterial probe into the incident has been referred to the lt. governor of Delhi.

However, not satisfied with the interim report submitted by the police Nov 19, 2008, the commission issued them an order Dec 22 asking them for a complete magisterial enquiry report within six weeks.
