New Delhi, Jan 2 (IANS) The government will promulgate an ordinance to hike the salaries of Supreme Court and high court judges, it was announced here Friday.
The chief justice of India would now get Rs.100,000 a month while Supreme Court judges would get Rs.90,000 per month, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
High court chief justices would get a monthly salary of Rs.90,000, while judges of these courts would get Rs.80,000 per month, Sibal added.
'The cabinet has decided to promulgate an ordinance for this,' Sibal said.
This was being done as bills on this could not be passed in the just-concluded session of parliament, he added.
The ordinance would have to be ratified when parliament meets for a brief session in February-March, an official said.
According to Sibal, pensions of judges would also be revised.
