Chidambaram visits injured in Guwahati serial blasts

Guwahati, Jan 2 (ANI): Union Home Minister P Chidambaram accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited the Gauhati Medical College Hospital to meet the injured in the serial blasts in the city in which 50 were injured and five killed.

 

He spent about 30 minutes in the hospital and directed the doctors to give the best possible medical care to the injured.

 

Chidambaram will have a meeting with the Unified Command in Guwahati today.

 

Talking to reporters, Gogoi has admitted that there were some security lapses. He however, denied that it was a failure of the State police saying that if they had not acted, it would have been much worse.

 

Gogoi said that he emphasised the need to strengthen security and intelligence in the state. He said the Home Minister has assured him that the Centre will extend all possible help to the state with regard to providing additional paramilitary forces to Assam. .

 

The explosions occurred at Birubari, Bhootnath, Bhangagarh areas in Guwahati. The first bomb blast occurred in Guwahati's Birubari area at 2.25 in the afternoon, the second in Bhootnath area at 5.15 p.m, and the third blast took place near Big Bazar outlet in Bhangarh area at 5.50 p.m.

 

On October 30, 2008, Assam witnessed serial blasts that left 88 people dead. (ANI)
