Hasina may pick young ministers, sideline veterans

Bangladesh, Fri, 02 Jan 2009 IANS

Dhaka, Jan 2 (IANS) Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina may choose younger and more educated leaders for her cabinet to fulfil her vision of a prosperous Bangladesh, in the process sidelining veterans who were part of the freedom movement that her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led in 1971.

Hasina may opt for a small cabinet comprising 25-30 members, including a few renowned professionals as technocrat ministers for finance and law among others, said The Daily Star Friday.

A few leaders from among the allies may also be given ministerial berths, sources were quoted as saying.

Jatiya Party's acting chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud and presidium members Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu and G.M. Quader, Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon and politburo member Fazle Hossain Badsha, and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal head Hasanul Haque Inu are the likely inductees from the alliance partners.

Party veterans likely to be left out include presidium members Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Abdur Razzak, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta and Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir. Some of them may head parliamentary committees.

While speculation mounted, Hasina, whose alliance won the election with a huge majority, has not indicated her ideas about the cabinet to be formed within next week.

As per the present schedule, the process would begin Sunday with the swearing in of newly elected members by the speaker of the eighth assembly Jamiruddin Serker, New Age newspaper said.

Awami League's Commerce and Industry Secretary Col (retd) Faruk Khan told The Daily Star: 'I believe the party chief will pick more efficient persons who will be able to contribute to the fulfilment of the party's electoral manifesto and the Vision 2021.'
