Balance tilts in favour of Congress in Goa
July 30: A voice vote in assembly proved the confidence of the house in the incumbent government led by congress. A floor test was conducted in the afternoon where the Kamat led coalition was saved.
In last few days BJP led coalition named as Goa Democratic Alliance became hyper-active in view of the withdrawal of the support by two members of MGP from the government and some days ago also presented its claim to form alternative government with majority in the assembly.
GDA also unanimously chose Manohar Parrikar leader of the coalition.
In the morning Manohar Parrikar accused the speaker acting in a partisan manner.
The dreams of the BJP to take hold of the state were shattered when the disqualification petitions were filed against Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party legislators Sudin and Dipak Dhavalikar before the floor test.
According to Parrikar the speaker acted partially as none of the brothers received any notice in this matter.
As was already expected by the opposition party that both the legislators will be barred from voting thus tilting the balance in favour of Digambar Kamat. BJP led coalition met Governor S C Jamir in the morning to ensure that the speaker acts fairly in the matter.
The coalition wanted to ensure that the floor test should by the first business on the card on Monday when the house meets for deciding the fate of congress led government. Kamat government survived as the three MLAs were kept out of voting as the disqualification petition was pending in the house.
Speaker also cast his vote in favour of the incumbent government while barring the three rebels out of the motion. House reflected the faith in the government by passing the confidence motion in its favour.
Till yet the politics of the state have been very volatile as there have been 19 Chief ministers in 20 years.
