Haneef likely to return India, charges dropped against him

July 27: After a tussle of almost 25 days the charges against Haneef have been dropped by Australian Police. Haneef is about to leave Australia for returning to India

Australian federal police dropped all the terrorism charges against him as earlier he was detained on July 02 on Australian airport regarding the failed UK terror plot.

Australian police charged him for providing reckless support to the terrorists who conspired the car bomb plot in UK which failed and who happened to be his cousins by providing his SIM card.

During the whole episode many inconsistencies on the part of police came to the fore. Police was blamed for detaining the Indian doctor illegally as could not find any evidence against him regarding his role in the terror plot. Police was also accused of writing some names of the terrorists in the diary of Haneef during investigation by the media.

Protests came from all the sides in Australia for detaining Haneef illegally and violating his human rights. He has been in custody for last four weeks and was charged 15 days ago.

At a press conference, the common wealth Director of public Prosecutions (DPP) Damian Bugg QC said that charges have been dropped because their was mistake in the case.

Sometime ago the AFP had applied that the charges be dropped in, to the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

He assured of inquiring how the mistake was made. This is to be known that on Wednesday Mr. Bugg had announced to review the case which indicated that charges are about to end as was also accepted by the chairman of the National Crime Authority, Peter Faris QC.

On Wednesday only the expectations were in air that the charges against Haneef may be dropped.



AFP commissioner Keetly though accepted the drop of the charges against Haneef but said that investigation will continue.

Mr. Bugg accepted that time pressured was a factor in the investigation defending the police officials.
