India, Malaysia to sign MoU for welfare of workers

Kuala Lumpur , Mon, 29 Dec 2008 ANI

Kuala Lumpur, Dec 29 (ANI): Malaysia and India will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to streamline the recruitment and welfare of workers in the two countries.

Malaysia's Human Resources Minister Dr S. Subramaniam said the MoU is expected to be signed during his meeting with India's Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi in New Delhi on January 3.

The agreement is expected to lead to smoother management of labour and also iron out problems faced by Indian workers in Malaysia and Malaysian workers in India, The Star quoted him, as saying.

Officials said there are about 150,000 workers from India in Malaysia.

Under the MoU, a group comprising representatives from the two countries would be set up to monitor and provide solutions to issues faced by these workers.

Subramaniam said the MoU was also expected to address abuses by recruiting agents who bring workers into Malaysia and leave them in a lurch. (ANI)
