July 26: The row following unprecedented order passed by judge Uma Nath singh in case of Tahar Singh is not yet over. UT administration asked senior standing counsel Anupam Gupta to resign from the post due to active participation in the agitation of the bar council against judge Uma Nath Singh.

UT adviser Lalit Sharma confirmed the report of his resignation. He told that “Mr. Gupta has been asked to resign after the episode which took place in the High court.

He also confirmed that resignation has been accepted but till yet denied any new appointment.

Gupta resigned the moment he got the order denying any compromise with his cherished moral values and gave more weight to his moral convictions rather than the post saying in his paper, “My commitment to the Chandigarh must necessarily yield place to my larger moral convictions as a member of he legal profession, a profession whose dignity, freedom and safety is a necessary guarantee not only of the rule of law but even of the independence of the judiciary”. He cited example of Pakistan in his support.

He also expressed in his resignation paper that he would not like to follow the path of those who in aspiration of power forget all the morality.

This whole episode dates back to the order by Uma Nath Singh instructing CBI to arrest his judicial brethren, Tahar Singh and admit him to mental asylum in Agra taking suo-moto notice of the FIR lodged by his wife for matrimonial cruelty and beating.

Mr. Singh termed the case as the worst case of mental disorder. Bar council opposed the order and had a stay on the order by calling an emergency division bench.

Since 23 July advocates boycotted judge Singh. They also passed a resolution to observe 30 July as protest day by wearing black bandages. Bar council also decided to send a delegation to meet the president to make her aware of the situation.
