Chennai, Sun, 28 Dec 2008 ANI

Chennai, Dec 28 (ANI): Many trucks are staying off road in Tamil Nadu as the truck operators and drivers are protesting against the hike in diesel price and delay in widening the Ennore-Ponneri road connectivity project and its proper upkeep.

Trailer Lorry and Tanker Owners Welfare Association President R Sukumar said: "We have already approached the Government, that immediately we want diesel prices to be reduced by rupees 10 per litre. Otherwise we will go on nationwide strike from January onwards. 50 lakh lorries will go on strike."

The strike, which has already entered the 9th day, has resulted in goods worth more than 5000 cores of rupees detained at the container terminal of Chennai Port.

Further, containers have been piling up everyday. If the strike continues, the container terminal is likely to run out of space in a couple of days.

According to the Trailer Lorry and Tanker Owners Welfare Association, the State Government has failed to honour its assurance that the Ennore-Chennai road will be four-laned by December 27.

Meanwhile, automobile major Hyundai that has its manufacturing plant near Chennai has been badly hit since the lot of 4,000 cars which it exports every week from Chennai port has been detained at the Chennai port. (ANI)
