Madhya Pradesh BJP meet to focus on party rebels, future polls

National,Politics, Fri, 26 Dec 2008 IANS

Bhopal, Dec 26 (IANS) Strategy for the Lok Sabha elections, organisational revamp and disciplinary action against rebels are the major issues likely to dominate the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) state executive Saturday, party sources said.

Buoyed by the comfortable majority it got in the state assembly polls for the second time in a row, the party wants to maintain its winning spree in the general elections also. The BJP won 143 of the 230 seats despite the poll analysts predicting a coalition.

The party also has the 24 of the 29 parliamentary seats in its kitty.

'However, the victory was not that easy for the party given the resentment over ticket distribution which led to anti-party activities at several places. Taking care of such elements who damaged the party during polls would be the first priority of the party,' said a senior BJP leader.

The party has already made its intentions clear - that 'indiscipline' in any form would not be tolerated, he added, citing the case of Bhopal district general secretary Ravindra Awasthi, who was suspended from the party Thursday.

'More heads would follow soon,' he added.

Suspension of Awasthi barely two days before the state BJP executive meet is an indication that the party will deal strongly with indiscipline and with those involved in anti-party activities, BJP sources said.

Earlier, newly elected legislator Sartaj Singh was issued a show cause notice when his supporters protested his non-inclusion in Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet.

In both cases, action was taken by state BJP president Narendra Singh Tomar, who is proving to be more assertive after the second consecutive victory of the party.

Party sources said a comprehensive list of all those who were involved in anti-party activities has been prepared by the state party and discussion on them is likely at the state executive meeting.

A minor revamp in the state party set-up is also expected since two party vice-presidents Gauri Shankar Bisen and Ramkrishna Kusumaria, and spokesperson Archana Chitnis have won the assembly election.

'The party is likely to discuss its strategy for the coming general elections and the assembly election results as well. The policies of the present state government may also come up for discussion,' former party spokesman Deepak Vijayvargiya said.
