Maya turns down CBI probe in lynching case

New Delhi, Fri, 26 Dec 2008 NI Wire

UP Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday turned down oppositions’ demand for a CBI probe into the lynching of state PWD executive engineer Manoj Kumar Gupta in Dibiyapur of Aurraiya district on Tuesday night, allegedly by a BSP MLA and his associates, even after it became apparent from the autopsy that the engineer was subjected to brutal torture to death. MLA was arrested later on Wednesday.

BSP supremo, rejecting the charge that murder was fundamentally linked to her birthday celebration, said angrily to the press that the murder had nothing to do with money being extracted from Gupta for contribution towards her birthday celebrations on Jan 15.

“You (the Press) should first prove that the murder is connected to my birthday celebrations, otherwise apologise to me for such wrong publicity,” she raged.

The autopsy conducted by a panel of five doctors revealed that Gupta was not only brutally beaten up but was given electric shocks too, causing a brain haemorrhage that proved fatal.

“The executive engineer had 32 injuries on his body, including head injuries leading to brain haemorrhage and a fracture in his hand,” said Auraiya chief medical officer Dr Karan Singh who headed the panel.

M K Gupta, an engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD) was beaten black and blue on Tuesday night after he was picked up from his house at Gail Vihar Colony locality of Auraiya and taken to an unidentified place by the ruling BSP legislator Shekhar Tiwari and two accomplices.

Later the seriously injured Gupta, a victim of highhandedness, was left at around 3.30 am at the Dibiyapur police station, about 100 km from Kanpur, saying to take action against the man indulging in hooliganism, and the trio went away. Gupta was declared dead after being taken to hospital.

Shashi Gupta, wife of the slain M K Gupta, who is in shell-shocked, in her report lodged with the police stated MLA Shekhar Tiwari and his two associates—Manoj Tyagi and Bhatia—forcibly entered the house, locked her in a bathroom and started beating her husband severely and later taken him with them.

“An FIR under various sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder), had been lodged against the MLA and his two associates at Dibiyapur police station," SHO Hoshiyar Singh told media.

Although police refused to comment on the motive of the brutal incident at the nascent age of investigation, however did not rule out the possibility of the extortion angle behind it.

Tiwari is believed to have demanded a hefty amount of money in connection with the birthday celebration of party leader and the Chief Minister Mayawati from the engineer, who is understood to have turned down the demand.

The BSP supremo holds a lavish birthday bash every year on Jan 15, and party leaders at various levels are reportedly directed to make their assigned contributions, which Mayawati has openly admitted in the past.
