Tuberculosis claims around 36 lives in Uttar Pradesh: Report

Kushinagar (UP), Thu, 25 Dec 2008 ANI

Kushinagar (UP), Dec 25 (ANI): Tuberculosis (TB) has claimed around 36 lives in Kushinagar of Uttar Pradesh, according to a report.

It is economically backward district and most of the villagers depend upon agriculture to sustain themselves.

Locals of the district complain of government's laxity and lack of help from the government.

"There has been no governmental help and we have around 30-35 people who are suffering from Tuberculosis and about a dozen have died. People cannot afford the treatment as they are poor," said Ravi Yadav, a Tuberculosis Patient.

Government officials on the other hand defend themselves by saying that Directly Observed Therapy short-courses (DOTS) are active in the hospitals in the district but the locals should take the initiative of coming forward and getting the treatment.

" We have DOTS centers here, which provide drugs and medical care to the Tuberculosis Patients. These DOTS centers are also advertised in media through pamphlets which are being distributed and the people who are suffering from the disease should also takean initiative and come to us on their own," said R.K. Singh, Chief Medical Officer Kushinagar district.

Tuberculosis is one of the world's deadliest diseases and campaigners say it is responsible for killing one person every 15 seconds. India's 15 million TB patients account for nearly one third of the world's cases. By Pawan Shah (ANI)
