July 25: Following the clearance of KK Paul’s appointment for a five-year tenure in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Yudbir Singh Dadwal an IPS officer of 1974 batch of AGMUT cadre who is currently serving as Special Commissioner of Delhi Police is likely to succeed Paul as the new Commissioner of Police for the capital. However, no formal decision has been announced in this regard.

Few days back two of the prominent names: Kiran Bedi and Dadwal were on the cards for the top post but finally Dadwal took a lead from Bedi as per the central government’s direction.

Kiran Bedi, the first woman IPS officer of the country of 1972 batch is currently posted as the Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD). In Police department she is known for her tough postures and reformist approach with criminals in jails.

Dadwal on the other hand is known for his long service in Delhi police and was also in several topmost jobs including Director General of Police during NDA as well as UPA regime. Earlier he has been also appointed as the Inspector General of Chandigarh Police and Additional Commissioner of New Delhi. Dadwal was also awarded Police Medal in the year 2006 for his contributions to the service.

Dadwal’s name was dragged into controversy in 1999 in Jessica Lal murder (April 30) case as he was present in the restaurant at the very evening. This later resulted in his removal from the post of the Joint Commissioner of Police. However, he had later told that his presence in the restaurant was merely a co-incidence and he was not present at the site when the incident took place.

Though both Bedi and Dadwal were equally on top for high post but it is believed to be the political will that may act against Bedi as some believe her to be radical.
