July 24: Lord came in India’s rescue at Lords to end the first test in draw against England who just sniff the victory that was not far away. England after a setting a target of 380 did bowl well to register a certain victory though rain washed out their wishes.

While chasing a difficult target of 380 India’s miserable batting only managed to put 282 at the loss of 9 wickets at the tea time when rain came against the wishes of English side and later umpires Steve Buckner and Simon Tuffel forced to call off the match due to weather.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni the wicket keeper batsman was the lone batsman who showed a great fight against the stiff bowling attack from English seamers and also the spinner Monty Panesar.

India resumed play in the final day with a bad note in the morning session as they lost Karthik and Ganguly cheaply. Ganguly with his experienced shoulder made a valuable contribution of 40 runs before got leg before by Ryan Sidebottom but that was not enough considering the condition. Soon after Karthik’s dismissal who was caught in the second slip by Paul Collingwood while driving James Anderson unnecessarily it was obvious for India to fight for saving the match.

It was Dhoni and old horse VVS Laxman who added 86 runs for the sixth wicket but after the departure of Laxman (39) by Chris Tremlett wickets continue to fell at regular interval as the lower order batsmen were not eager to stand much on the crease. Dhoni in his 200 minutes stand made 76 runs with the help of 10 boundaries. In the end at tea time rain and bad light stopped play bringing fortune for India.

England bowler just needed few minutes to get that one wicket for the victory but it was not their day. In the second innings all the bowlers showed a great spirit by sticking to the line and length. James Anderson who confined India’s first innings by taking five wickets continued his good form and added another two in the second innings.

On the other hand Chris Tremlett (3-52), Ryan Sidebottom (2-42) and Monty Panesar (2-63) did bowl well to make India feel the heat.

However, India can go to Nottingham for the second test with some positive notes as the bowlers performed well in both the innings who were always in question. But the management had to think a lot as far as the top order batting is concerned though youngsters like Karthik and Dhoni has proved their credibility for being in the team.
