Islamabad, Dec.22 (ANI): Several arms and ammunitions seized from the Lal Masjid during the 'Operation Silence' last year have been stolen from the Aabpara police station here.
"The weapons have been stolen under 'mysterious' circumstances," the Daily Times reported a private television channel, as saying.
Taking serious note of the theft, Interior Adviser Rehman Malik has suspended 10 police officials on the charge of dereliction of duty. All the accused were arrested later.
"Aabpara ASP Shehzad Asim, SSP Captain Ahmed Latif and the Aabpara superintendent of police have been suspended," a spokesman of the Interior Ministry said.
Malik has also ordered a registration of a case against the Aabpara station house officer and 14 other officials on charges of criminal breach of trust.
Over 100 assault rifles and other sophisticated weapons were found missing from the police station store. (ANI)
Lal Masjid was run by Islamic militants led by the brothers, Maulana Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rashid Ghazi, who continued to challenge the government for more than six months. They carried out violent demonstrations, hateful speeches, destruction of private and public property, kidnapping, arson and armed clashes with the authorities.
The Lal masjid complex was besieged from July 3, 2007 to July 11, 2007, after negotiations between the government and the militants failed.
The complex was stormed by the Pakistani Army and members of the Special Service Group and re-taken. The overall conflict resulted in death of 154 people and 50 militants were captured alive.(ANI)
