July 23: Continuing her good performance in Cincinnati Open Indian tennis star Sania Mirza won the doubles title with the partnership of American Bethanie Mattek.
Mirza and Mattek combination considered as the top seeded in the tournament beat unseeded Alina Jikova ( Russia) and Tatiana Poutchek ( Belarus) with straight sets 7-6, 7-5 to win the doubles title.
The advantage point of the final match is that both Mattek and Sania did serve well with solid forehand.
Though Mirza did not enjoy a good run in Wimbledon and only managed to reach the 2 nd round due to a prolong knee injury, her recent performance in singles and doubles at the Cincinnati open will help her career further.
Currently placed 38 th of WTA ranking, Sania had also a good run in the singles competition of the tournament by reaching the semifinals. However, she lost to world number eight and top seeded Anna Chakvetadze in the singles semifinals 2-6, 7-5, 3-6.
After losing the first set in the singles semifinals she had shown a great fight by winning the second set 7-5. But eventually in the decider she went 5-0 down and lost.
With this doubles title Sania wins her second doubles title this year and also her 5 th WTA doubles title. On the other hand the 21-year-old Mattek won her first tour doubles title and the second of her career.
Early in this year Bethanie Mattek had won her two opening matches in Australian Opens and has also already won a Sony Ericsson WTA tour doubles title. But this win will further make better in improving her career graph.
