Hundreds in Balochistan hold anti-India protest over water sharing

Pakistan, Fri, 19 Dec 2008 IANS

Islamabad, Dec 19 (IANS) Hundreds of people held an anti-India demonstration in Pakistan's Balochistan province Friday to protest the neighbour 'stealing' water of common rivers that flow from India's Jammu and Kashmir state, media reports said.

Tribal elders, politicians and residents attended the anti-India rally in the southwestern town of Chaman, in Balochistan province on the border with Afghanistan, Dawn reported Friday.

The protesters also burnt an Indian flag and an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

'India wants to steal our water in Kashmir, and that is why it is piling pressure on Pakistan following the attacks in Mumbai,' politician Naseer Ahmed Bacha Khan told the protesters in Chaman.

Pakistan has alleged that India is building dams in its part of Kashmir in violation of a 1960 Indus water sharing accord brokered by the World Bank.
