Surat, Dec 19 (ANI): The wife of a diamond company manager in Surat committed suicide after killing her three-year-old daughter, all attributed to the severe losses in the diamond industry that is severely hit by global meltdown.

The bodies of Sonal Bhatia, the mother and her daughter Shreya were found at their home in Katargam area.

According the local police, the deceased Sonal's husband Deval was a manager in a diamond company who didn't get his dues for over two-months.

These trends made it difficult for the family to survive. Further, Deval also suffered heavy losses in the share market and this could be one of the reasons for his wife's suicide.

"The lady committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan and her three year old daughter might have also been suffocated to death as we found a pillow next to her. In the primary investigations, we found that her husband didn't receive salary for the past two and a half months. He suffered losses in the share market also. They also had economic disputes among themselves," said K S Patel, Inspector of Police, Katargam, Surat.

He also added to say that the forensic lab experts have been summoned to find out the exact reason for her death and further investigations are on.

Diamond industry has been reeling under a spate of problems. Many diamond cutting and processing units in Surat and Mumbai have already rolled down shutters rendering thousands unemployed.

The current recessionary trend seems to have robbed off the sheen from the diamond industry in Gujarat.

Those who have been in the business for decades are feeling the heat of the global meltdown. The demand has slackened, not only in the international markets but in the domestic markets as well. (ANI)
