Five believed dead as Madhya Pradesh coal mine caves in
Bhopal, Dec 17 (IANS) At least five workers who were trapped when a coal mine in Madhya Pradesh caved in early Wednesday morning are believed to be dead, the police said.
The accident took place at a mine of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) in Singrauli district, some 400 km from here.
The workers and some equipment were trapped in the slush after the mines caved in as soon as the first shift started around 4.00 a.m. Wednesday.
'Considering the time since the workers have been trapped below the slush, there is hardly any chance of anyone being alive,' said a police official on condition of anonymity.
'More than 10 hours have passed since the relief and rescue operations started at the mines and it would take another eight to 10 hours to remove the slush,' Singrauli District Collector Vivek Porwal told IANS.
Northern Coalfields Limited was formed in April 1986 as a subsidiary company of Coal India Limited.
