Jitender Brar wedded to social cause through theatre

Amritsar, Dec.15 (ANI): An engineer by profession and a successful entrepreneur, Jitender Brar's passion to revive Punjabi theatre evokes admiration when one gets to know how he has dedicated himself to highlight social causes through theatre.

Jiternder Brar, 60, has devoted himself to raise social issues plaguing the society at large today. He is doing so through his 'Punjab Naat Shala', the theatre.

Jitender describes the theatre form of art as something vital for civilization.

"Plays are important for any culture or civilization. When we were students in college, theatre was a hobby. But, later on when we faced problems in the society, then we realized that theatre was also a platform to highlight these social ills. And it is with these dreams that I started `Punjab Naat Shaala', said Jitender Brar.In the last 11 years, Jitender' Punjab Naat Shaala has performed in over 900 shows. Many of them have been produced by Punjab Naat Shala.

"We feel that it's a big achievement in theatre, as people from Amritsar come in large numbers to watch the shows. Even people from places like Ludhiana, Sangroor, Malhout, Jalandhar and nearby towns come regularly. We find it a nice thing as Amritsar has certainly made its contribution to Punjabi theatre. We are proud that theatre artists from here are working in TV serials. It's a good feeling," Brar added.

Brar believes by adding more of modern technology to the present-day theatre world, it can grown in popularity and become a major fascination. And, that requires adequate funds.

"Theatre is not just associated with art and culture. If technology is not attached to it, it won't be a successful production. For that we require funds. In my early days, I had migrated and was a green card holder, I decided to go abroad and earn money to start a theatre back home. But when I reached abroad I realized that after some time I wouldn't be able to return home and my dream of theatre would be shattered. I decided that if I had to do some job, it could only be in my own country. I had confidence in my profession and in myself. Then I started my own business," said Brar.

Brar says that he is even running his private business mainly to generate enough money to support his love- the Punjab Naat Shala. By Savinder Singh (ANI)
