Srinagar, Dec 12 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched a mass awareness drive on the need to conserve Dal Lake in Srinagar and prompt the removal of encroachments in the green belt around the lake.
"Dal Lake is a significant landmark of Srinagar. Everyone here is concerned about the saving of the lake. We also got a warm response from the people. With this cooperation such a drive can be successful," said Vidhi Kumar Birdhi, Superintendent Police, Srinagar.
On their part, apart from the general public, host of shopkeepers, Shikara (gondola) and houseboat owners have responded positively.
"This is a good step. It should not be just two to three days drive. If there is continuity, we will appreciate and give our full cooperation," said Tariq Ahmad, Secretary (Publicity), Dal Lake House Boat Owners Association, Srinagar.
Environmentalists and even hundreds of residents are concerned over shrinking of the lake due to encroachment by people.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken the lead since the police personnel interact regularly with the commercial establishments and the residents residing in the vicinity of the lake as well as the visiting tourists.
"Kashmir Police are working really hard day in and day out to save the lake. They stop people from throwing waste materials in the lake. To save the lake is also our duty," said Gulam Mohammad Dar, a resident.
The Police Department have launched the drive for the noble cause of restoring and preserving the heritage of Kashmir valley. (ANI)
