Hillary Clinton to get $5,000 less salary than Rice

Americas, Fri, 12 Dec 2008 IANS

Washington, Dec 12 (Xinhua) The US Congress has voted to cut the secretary of state's salary back to its pre-2007 level, paving the way for Hillary Clinton to fill that post, CNN reported Thursday.

The move was meant to conform to a clause in the constitution stipulating a member of congress cannot be appointed to a government job if the position's salary has increased during the lawmaker's current term.

The former first lady was a sitting senator when President George W. Bush authorised a pay raise of $5,000 for the secretary of state last January.

Though Hillary will miss the pay rise, she will still make about $10,000 more a yaer being the secretary of state than what she is currently drawing as a senator.

A similar move was made in 1993 when then president Bill Clinton picked then senator Lloyd Bentsen as treasury secretary.
