Foreign ministers to usher in new chapter for Asean
Jakarta, Dec 9 (DPA) Foreign ministers of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) will meet in Jakarta next week to celebrate the new charter of the regional grouping, the 10-nation bloc said Tuesday.
The event at the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta on Dec 15 will mark the effective date of the bloc's guiding constitution, the Secretariat said in a statement.
'The entry into force of the Charter is a historic milestone for the organisation, repositioning Asean to better meet the challenges of the 21st century,' Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan said.
The Asean summit was initially scheduled to take place in Thailand in mid-December but was postponed following the recent political turmoil in that country.
Asean groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Thailand currently holds the rotating chairmanship.
