Amritsar, Dec.9 (ANI): A non-governmental organization here is aiming to promote Sikhism and encourage among young people a sense of affection for Sikhs' way of life.

Saga-2008 has been organized here for the Sikh youth as part of an endeavour to promote Sikhism and generate a sense of Punjabi culture among them.

Kesh Sambhal Prachar Sanstha, the NGO's main aim behind this extravaganza is to motivate Sikh youth to abide by Sikh Maryada or Sikhism.

Dressed in traditional Sikh attire, 18 contestants recently contested with each other at the Saga 2008 show and showcased their talent to win the crown of 'He Khalsa' and `She Khalsa'. Individuals, following`Sikh Rehat Maryada' or Code of Conduct, with regard to keeping their hair unshorn, untrimmed beards and moustaches, reached the final stage of this contest. "We are participating in this contest where `He' and `She' Khalsa will be nominated. They will be a role model for the coming generation of Sikhs and will promote Sikhism and its culture," said one of the contestants at the event.

"It's a proud moment for every participant that we are getting an opportunity to be a role model for our future generation," said another contestant. The female contestants have vowed to fight social evils like female foeticide, drug menace and dowry system.

Started in 1999, Kesh Sambhal Prachar Sanstha, helps in personality growth and conducts written tests and , interviews to check general ability, spiritual knowledge, educational excellence, and promotes talent and hobbies.

S.J.S Pall, organizer of SAGA-2008 Contest, said: " There is shortage in general awareness so it is very important to educate the youth. It's the duty of non-governmental organizations like us to inform the youngsters about their religion. Our organization not only organizes SAGA contests but many other awareness programmes throughout the year. They include spiritual camps, religious knowledge and teachings of the gurus as well."

Many people believe that such events motivate the Sikh youth to follow Sikh culture. Nominated role models will inspire everyone. Though not all contestants reach the final stage of the contest, but the knowledge that they acquire in the process is significant.

It is hoped that the confidence that they gain makes them competitive in their careers.y Savinder Singh (ANI)
