Obama nominates Iraq war critic as Veterans Affairs head

Americas, Mon, 08 Dec 2008 IANS

Washington, Dec 8 (DPA) US president-elect Barack Obama has nominated Eric Shinseki, the former chief of staff of the US Army, to head the country's Department of Veterans Affairs.

Obama announced the selection Sunday in Chicago.

Shinseki, 66, held the chief of staff position from 1999 to 2003.

Shinseki drew the ire of the Bush administration when he disagreed with other Pentagon officials about the war planning and speculated that more troops than planned would be needed for the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
