Term of Liberhan Ayodhya Commission of inquiry extended by three months

New Delhi, July 1 (ANI): The term of the Liberhan Ayodhya Commission of inquiry has been extended by three months up to 30th September.

 

The Commission is inquiring into the destruction of the Ram Janma Bhoomi-Babri Masjid structure at Ayodhya on 6th December, 1992.

 

Established on December 16, 1992, ten days after the demolition that triggered widespread communal violence, the panel headed by retired Justice M S Liberhan, has got 46 extensions.

 

The probe panel has become one of the longest and costliest commissions with over Rs.7.5 crore having been already spent during this period.

 

The Commission, constituted by the Home Ministry, was expected to submit its report by March 16, 1993. It was mandated to inquire into the circumstances leading to the demolition of the Babri Mosque.

 

During the extended proceedings, the Commission has recorded the statements of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Kalyan Singh.

 

The last extension for two months ended on June 30. (ANI)
