Four journalists injured while covering Kashmir clash

National, Sun, 07 Dec 2008 IANS

Srinagar, Dec 7 (IANS) Four journalists, including three from foreign agencies, were injured Sunday while covering a clash between security personnel and anti-poll protesters in Sopore constituency of Baramulla district in the Kashmir Valley, officials said.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) photojournalist Tauseef Mustafa, Associated Press (AP) photojournalist Mukhtar Ahmed, Reuters' Faiyaz Kabli and Masood Hussain of the Economic Times were injured as they tried to cover the clash in Arampora area of Sopore.

The journalists allege they were 'roughed up' by the security personnel to stop them from covering the incident.

The protesters were out since morning to dissuade people from casting their votes and clashed with security forces who used batons and tear-gas to disperse the mob.

The four journalists were taken to Sopore hospital, which referred them to Srinagar for specialised treatment.

Sopore, the hometown of hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, went to poll in the fourth phase of the seven-phase elections to the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly.
