Kathmandu, Sun, 07 Dec 2008 ANI

Kathmandu, Dec 7 (ANI): Nepal Defence Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has said that the nature of democracy envisioned by CPN-Maoist for new Nepal would be fundamentally different and pro-poor.

Nepalnews quoted Thapa as saying that we will refrain from adopting the form of democracy being practiced by countries like the US and India where weak and poor people are subjugated to the vested interest of strong and rich.

Stating that the new democratic framework of Nepal will enable the people of the same socio-economic status to compete with each other he said, "The new constitution to be proposed by his party will rule out every vestige of feudalism in the country".

He also claimed that the democracy that his party has in mind would bring the marginalised into the political mainstream through proportional representation.

The national cadres' meeting of Maoists has formulated five basic features for a new Nepal.

The meeting that ended on November 26 had adopted the People's Federal Democratic National Republic as the working policy of party following a debate over two different political papers presented party Prachanda and the Maoist's organisation chief Mohan Baidya.

Describing other features in the new constitution, Thapa said the new constitution will rule out the establishment of any form of monarchy.

He said the third feature was that the Maoist would not let foreign powers have any influence on decisions to be made in new Nepal.

As the fourth feature, he added that his party would not let any dictatorial rule in the country and is in favour of democracy.

The fifth feature of the meet was ending the centralised structure and establishing a new central structure to ensure the rights and identities of people from different castes, languages and classes.(ANI)
