PCB puts premier league plan in cold storage

Karachi, Fri, 05 Dec 2008 ANI

Karachi, Dec.5 (ANI): Pakistan's cricket officials have dumped plans to launch a new look Twenty20 domestic tournament next year on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to The News, the new cricket regime in Pakistan has so far shown no interest in the so-called Pakistan Premier League which the former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Nasim Ashraf had planned to launch with a bang in September or October next year.

However, following Ashraf's resignation in August, the plans have been shelved as the new PCB chief Ijaz Butt and his close associates are not really impressed by the idea at a time when the Board is struggling to make ends meet.

Sources said that the biggest hurdles blocking the launch of PPL are the lack of any suitable window for what would at least be an event spanning over 10-14 days and the fact that the security situation in the country will keep the foreign stars away from the contest.

The PCB is currently facing major financial problems because of the refusal of foreign teams to visit Pakistan because of security worries.

Sources said that in the current circumstances, the PCB top brass is not sure whether to spend money on a brand new premier league would be a wise move. (ANI)
