Aizawl, Dec 3 (IANS) Mizoram made electoral history with nearly 80 percent voting in Tuesday's election to the 40-seat assembly, officials said here Wednesday.
'Even as the reports from fur-flung areas of the mountainous state are still awaited, 79 percent turnout was recorded so far on the basis of the reports available in the election department here,' said Ruata, a spokesman of the Mizoram election department.
'The poll percentage would be more than 80 when we get all the figures. In 2003, the poll percentage was 78.58 percent.'
There were an estimated 611,124 people who were eligible to cast their votes.
The oldest voter recorded was Lalbiakthuami, a 106-year-old woman from Mamit district.
'The main struggle for political supremacy in Mizoram is between the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the main opposition Congress party while the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) may play a crucial role in forming the new ministry if the two contender parties fail to secure the magic number of 21 in the 40-member house,' said Lalthuama Sailo, a political analyst.
In all 206 candidates, including nine women aspirants, were in the fray. Results are due Dec 8.
