July 13: In a party working committee meeting the National Conference of Jammu and Kashmir would take a decision to join the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA). The “Third Front” UNPA is a newly formed group of eight parties.
On July 09, the party leader and former Chief Minister of J&K Farooq Abdullah had attended a meeting with other leaders of UNPA and expressed his willingness to join the third front. But he had made it clear to make his final decision after meeting with his party colleagues.
Mr. Abdullah has also announced in Srinagar to meet other UNPA leaders tomorrow in a meeting and decide further in his party’s association in UNPA. The meeting would be take place in New Delhi tomorrow.
In tomorrow’s meeting UNPA leaders will also decide about their stand on the coming presidential and vice-presidential election.
National Conference is a pro-India nationalist party demanding complete autonomy for the Jammu and Kashmir but within the constitution of India. Hence, it is also opposed by the separatists and militant outfit in the state, which is clear from the recent attack against Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah near escaped from the attack as the grenade blast some 200 meters away from him.
The party is also trying to strengthen its base in the valley before the 2008 assembly election as both Farooq and Omar Abdullah are planning to contest in the Assembly pools.
Meanwhile, the July 14 meeting of UNPA in which all major leaders will attain including TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala and AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa would decide further strategies of the new political outfit.
