Kolkata, Nov 29 (IANS) Bhaichung Bhutia and Jose Barreto fired on target to guide Mohun Bagan to a 2-0 win over Chirag United in an I-league engagement here Saturday.
While Barreto struck in the 14th minute, Bhutia scored on the half hour mark to fashion Bagan's sixth consecutive win.
Halfway into the glamorous league, Bagan have 21 points from 11 games. Chirag remained on 12 points after the Salt Lake stadium outing.
The winners were clearly the dominant side in the opening session, as they attacked time and again to rattle their opponents' defence.
The three-time champions went ahead in the 14th minute, when a Marcos corner saw Shylo Malswamtluanga send a floater into the box, and Barreto outjumped his marker Subhasish Roychowdhury to head home.
The city giants doubled the lead in the 30th minute, as Malswamtluanga addressed a chip to Barreto, who displayed fine ball control to drag two players towards him and freed Bhutia. The lethal Sikkimese had little difficulty in finishing it off in style.
Bagan led 2-0 at halftime, but seemed on the defensive after the lemon break as Chirag seized the initiative.
The ultimate losers created five chances, but failed to make any dent in the scoreline, as their upfronters failed to click.
